“Pay $1,500 and we guarantee you a job and visa in Europe.” If you hear this, walk away. Here is why, and what to do instead.
How the scam usually works
- The bait: an advert on Facebook, TikTok or WhatsApp promising jobs in Europe (farms, factories, hotels, care homes, driving), often with high salaries and “no experience needed”.
- The first fee: a small “registration” or “processing” fee to hold your place.
- More fees: “work permit”, “medical”, “training”, “embassy” or “flight” fees, each one urgent.
- The disappearance: the visa never comes, or a fake contract is rejected at the embassy, and the agent stops answering.
Real recruiter or scammer?
| Legitimate | Scam warning sign |
|---|---|
| The employer pays the recruiter | You are asked to pay for the job |
| Real interview, often by video | No interview, or only WhatsApp chat |
| Company email and website you can check | Gmail or Yahoo addresses only |
| Clear contract you can read before agreeing | Contract only after payment |
| You apply for the visa yourself at the embassy | “We handle the visa, guaranteed” |
Safer ways to find work in Europe
- Use official government portals such as EURES (the EU’s job mobility portal) and Make it in Germany.
- Apply directly on company career pages.
- Look at official routes such as the Germany Opportunity Card, where you deal with the government directly.
- Check every listing on our Jobs page against its official link.
If you have already paid
- Stop paying, even if they threaten to cancel your “place”.
- Save all messages, receipts and phone numbers.
- Contact your bank or mobile money provider, and report to the police.
- Warn others: share what happened so friends and family don’t fall for the same people.
